Lora Hawkins earned a B.A. in English/Theatre from Warren Wilson College, where she focused on directing and design. She received her M.A.T. in English Education (grades 7-12) and initial teaching licensure from Brown University and completed her Ph.D. in English Education at Columbia University’s Teachers College. Dr. Hawkins has taught for over a decade in various settings, including Peru, China, Kuwait, Rhode Island, New York, and North Carolina. As a Zankel Fellow, she served as a writing and publication consultant with Columbia’s Center for Professional Education of Teachers, where she worked with underserved students in Harlem and the Bronx. Overseas, she developed an experimental Small Learning Community that focused on culturally sustaining, project-based, and choice-based pedagogy. Dr. Hawkins was awarded the Golden Apple Award for teaching and was selected as a distinguished educator by the New York Times. Currently, she is interested in Youth-led Participatory Action Research and works in partnership with a Title I school in Asheville, North Carolina. She is delighted to join Appalachian State as an Assistant Professor.
