BOONE, N.C. — Appalachian State University's Department of English is accepting Creative Writing scholarship applications beginning today (October 18, 2023) through November 3, 2023. Late submissions will not be accepted. In order to synchronize the Creative Writing scholarships with the ASAP system, in Fall 2023, applicants will be considered for both the Spring 2023 and the 2024-25 scholarship cycles.
This will be the only opportunity to apply for the John Foster West Endowed Creative Writing Prize, Marian Coe Scholarship in Creative Writing , Marjorie South Idol Prize for Fiction and Creative Prose, Marjorie South Idol Prize for Poetry, and Rogers and Janice Whitener Creative Writing Scholarship until 2025.
For the West, Coe and Idol scholarships, students will submit manuscripts of poetry and/or creative prose. Prose submissions should be double-spaced, and screenplays and scripts should follow normal conventions for those genres. Prose submissions are limited to 20 pages of self-contained text, such as a complete short story, or to the first 20 pages of a screenplay or playscript. Poetry submissions should be single-spaced and should consist of four poems that are saved in one document. All submissions must be saved and uploaded as PDFs.
For the Whitener scholarship, students will be asked to provide information about their contributions to class climate, their participation in program events, a list of Creative Writing classes they have taken, and any special circumstances that may affect their need for financial assistance. For this scholarship, students do not need to submit a writing sample.
Students may submit a maximum of one prose and one poetry entry and may also apply for the Whitener scholarship. All applications must be submitted through the ASAP portal.
