ENG 3174: Topics in Global Cinema (Animation)
Tuesdays and Thursdays
Time: 11:00-12:15
Location: Sanford Hall 214
Far from mere children’s entertainment, the art of animation has been central to the development of the moving image since the very beginning of cinema. In this course, we will analyze animated projects from multiple modes and national contexts in order to better understand the form’s history, aesthetics, and role in shaping visual culture throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. While our explorations will range from Disney to digital games and from art cinema to anime, we will be anchored by a few guiding questions, namely: How does animation draw from or operate differently from other forms of visual art? How has it been used in different times and places to tell stories or spread ideologies? What is the relationship between animation and reality, and how does technology mediate that relationship? No previous film experience required.
