ENG 4620: Constructing Languages

ENG 4620: Constructing Languages will be taught by Dr. Lillian this Fall 2021 smester. It will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:00 to 3:15. In this class, students will work with eachother to create a fictional world and a new language. Any comments, questions, or concerns can be directed to Dr. Lillian at lilliandl@appstate.edu.

From Dr. Lillian,

This class is about language and it's about people. Some assignments will be individual, but most will be collaborative. Individually, each student researches an invented language and does a presentation for the class. As a class, we read and discuss Suzette Haden Elgin's sci-fi novel, Native Tongue. In small groups, students invent a simple map language. The main project, though, is to collectively build a fictional world and create a new language appropriate to that world. As a final project, each student writes or creates something in our invented language, either individually or in a small group, and then presents their creation to the class.
