This section of ENG 4795 will focus on “genre” fiction of the 1960s and early 1970s, particularly “westerns,” fantasy and science fiction, and mystery novels, with an emphasis on their literary value, cultural contexts, and historical insights as well as their genre significance and traits. Graded elements may include quizzes, in-class writing, midterm and final exams, and short papers as well as a final research paper. Possible novels include: John Williams’s 1960 Butcher’s Crossing, Charles Portis’s 1961 True Grit, Thomas Berger’s 1964 Little Big Man, Ray Bradbury’s 1962 Something Wicked This Way Comes, Chester Himes's 1965 Cotton Comes to Harlem, Philip K. Dick’s 1968 Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? or his 1969 Ubik, John D. McDonald’s 1968 Pale Gray for Guilt, Ursula K. Le Guin’s 1969 The Left Hand of Darkness, John Gardner’s 1971 Grendel, Le Guin’s 1972 The Word for World is Forest, the 1970s science fiction short stories of “James Tiptree, Jr.” (Alice Sheldon), and Ross Macdonald’s 1971 The Underground Man.
The graded elements of the 4796 Capstone section of the class will replace the short papers and research paper of the 4795 section with the Capstone research paper itself.
Note that the hybrid (online) ratio of the class will be relatively low; most classes will meet face to face.
