Our class will undertake a deep dive into a selection of American short story authors and their collected fiction, moving through a number of texts by each author in term in order to experience, enjoy, and analyze their own particular thematic interests and development over the course of their careers. Possible authors include John Updike, Raymond Carver, Shirley Jackson, John Cheever, Andre Dubus, Jhumpa Lahiri, James Baldwin, Katherine Mansfield, Eudora Welty, and others. Graded assignments may include weekly written responses, one or more short papers, an annotated bibliography, and a research paper.
