This course is a deep dive into the remarkable Iranian cinema: its development before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, its persistence despite the carnage of the 1980s Iran-Iraq War, and its flourishing in the 1990s and into the present. Directors we’ll study include Forugh Farrokhzad, Abbas Kiarostami, Mohsen Makhmalbaf, Majid Majidi, Jafar Panahi, Asghar Farhadi, and Ana Lily Aminpoor. We’ll also explore how the production, distribution, and reception of Iranian film connects to both shifts in Iran’s own theocratic government and to the activities of conservative politicians in other countries (Muslim Ban, anyone?).
